It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean in the north and the east, the Indian Ocean in the west and the Southern Ocean in the south. Capital : Sydney


New South Wales (NSW) is a state on the east coast of Australia. Its capital is Sydney. It borders Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south and South Australia to the west. Its coast borders the Coral and Tasman seas to the east. The Australian Capital Territory is within this state.


2. Queensland
Capital : Brisbane


Queensland is the second-largest state of Australia. Ten of Australia's thirty largest cities are located in this state. It borders Northern Territory to the west, South Australia to the south-west and New South Wales to the south. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland.


3. South Australia
Capital : Adelaide


South Australia (SA) is the fourth largest state and the fifth most populous state of Australia. It is a state in the southern part of Australia. Adelaide is its capital. It borders Northern Territory to the north, Western Australia to the west, Queensland to the northeast and New South Wales to the east.


4. Tasmania
Capital : Hobart


Tasmania is an island state below Victoria. Its capital is Hobart. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. A fact about Tasmania is that Tasmania is the 26th largest island in the world.


5. Victoria
Capital : Melbourne


Victoria is the second smallest state in Australia. It encompasses mountains, national parks, wineries and surfing beaches. The city of Melbourne is its capital. It borders New South Wales to the north and South Australia to the west.


6. Western Australia
Capital : Perth


Western Australia is the largest state of Australia, which covers the entire western third of Australia. It borders Northern Territory to the north-east and South Australia to the south-east. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean to the west. Perth is the capital city of this state.

1. Australian Capital Territory
Capital : Canberra


Australian Capital Territory contains Canberra, the capital of Australia along with some surrounding townships. It is surrounded by New South Wales from all sides. It has an area of 2,358 km² and a population of 4.62 lakhs.

2. Jervis Bay Territory


Jervis Bay Territory is the smallest territory of Australia by area with an area of 67.8  km². You will be shocked to know that the population of Jervis Bay Territory is 391 according to the 2016 census ! It is surrounded by New South Wales to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

3. Northern Territory
Capital : Darwin


Northern Territory is the largest territory of Australia. This territory is a vast federal territory farmed for its outback desert landscapes. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the north, Queensland to the east, South Australia to the south and West Australia to the west. Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory.
